Railway NFR Apprentice Recruitment 2026 has been announced for candidates who want practical training with Northeast Frontier Railway. A total of 6,777 Act Apprentice training slots are available in different NFR divisions, workshops and departments. Lumding has the highest number of training slots, followed by Katihar and the New Bongaigaon units. However, candidates should not choose a unit only because it has more vacancies. Check whether your ITI trade is available in that unit and whether the training location is practical for you.

The number of slots is provisional. Northeast Frontier Railway may increase or reduce the number depending on its final training requirements.

Not every trade is available in every division. Candidates should study the unit-wise and trade-wise vacancy tables in the notification before entering their preferences.

Most trades have a training period of one year, while a few specialized trades may have a different duration. The exact period depends on the designated trade and the apprenticeship curriculum.

Candidates must meet the required educational qualification and age limit on the date stated in the official notification.

Educational Qualification for ITI Trades

For most apprentice trades, candidates must:

• Have passed Class 10 or an equivalent examination under the 10+2 education system.
• Have at least 50% aggregate marks in Class 10.
• Hold an ITI National Trade Certificate or provisional certificate in the relevant notified trade.
• Have an ITI certificate issued by NCVT or SCVT.

The requirement of 50% marks in Class 10 does not apply to SC, ST and PwBD candidates. However, they must still possess the required passing qualification and relevant trade certificate. Candidates must already have their ITI pass certificate, NTC or STC on the date of the notification. Merely completing the course without receiving the required certificate is not enough.

Qualification for Medical Laboratory Technician Trades

Candidates applying for Medical Laboratory Technician in Pathology or Radiology must:

• Have passed Class 10 with at least 50% marks.
• Have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
• Have at least 50% marks in Class 12.
• Upload Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and passing certificates.

ITI is not the main qualification for these two Medical Laboratory Technician categories.

The applicant must be at least 15 years old and must not be older than 24 years as of 19 August 2026, which is the closing date of the application.

Age Relaxation

Ex-servicemen receive relaxation based on the length of defence service and the conditions explained in the official notice. The relaxation applies to eligible ex-servicemen applicants and not to their children.

The application fee is ₹100, and it must be paid online through the payment gateway connected to the NFR application system. The fee is non-refundable.

The following candidates do not have to pay the application fee:

• SC candidates
• ST candidates
• PwBD candidates
• Women candidates
• Economically Backward Class candidates

Candidates claiming the Economically Backward Class fee exemption must have an annual family income below ₹50,000. They must also upload the prescribed income certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026.

EBC and EWS are not the same category. An EWS certificate alone should not be treated as proof of EBC fee exemption unless the candidate meets the conditions given in the notification.

Candidates who want to correct a submitted application must pay ₹50 for each correction attempt. Information entered during the original registration cannot be changed later.

There is no written examination or interview in the initial selection process. Candidates will be shortlisted through academic merit, followed by document verification and medical fitness.

The selection stages are:

1. Preparation of unit-wise and trade-wise merit lists
2. Shortlisting according to merit and preference
3. Document verification
4. Medical fitness check
5. Final engagement for apprenticeship training

For most trades, the merit score will be calculated using the average of:

• Class 10 percentage
• ITI percentage

A simple example can make this easier to understand.

Suppose a candidate has:

• 78% in Class 10
• 82% in ITI

The merit score will be:

78 + 82 = 160

160 ÷ 2 = 80% merit score

Marks from all Class 10 subjects will be considered. For ITI, the average marks shown in the consolidated statement for all semesters will be used.

For Medical Laboratory Technician Pathology and Radiology, the merit score will be based on the average of:

• Class 10 percentage
• Class 12 Science percentage

Class 12 marks must include the required Physics, Chemistry and Biology qualification.

When two candidates have the same merit score:

• The older candidate will be placed higher.
• When their date of birth is also the same, the candidate who passed Class 10 earlier will receive preference.

NFR will normally call candidates equal to about 1.5 times the number of notified slots for document verification. Being called for verification does not automatically mean final selection.

7. Complete the registration using your active mobile number and email address.
8. Log in with the registration details.
9. Enter your personal and educational information.

Candidates must keep their registration number safe. They should also continue using the same mobile number and email address throughout the recruitment process.

Each candidate can submit only one online application. Submitting more than one form can lead to disqualification.

The order of unit, department and trade preferences is also important. NFR will consider the candidate for one Unit–Department–Trade combination according to merit and the preference order entered in the form. When a candidate receives a higher preference, the lower preferences will automatically be cancelled.

Take time to check the vacancy table before finalizing your choices. Do not select units randomly.

Candidates should prepare clear scanned copies of the following documents:

• Class 10 mark sheet
• Class 10 passing certificate
• Class 12 mark sheet and certificate for Laboratory Technician trades
• Proof of date of birth when it is not shown on the Class 10 certificate
• Consolidated ITI mark sheet
• National Trade Certificate or provisional trade certificate

• Ex-servicemen discharge or serving certificate, where applicable
• EBC income certificate for fee exemption
• Recent colour photograph
• Scanned signature

Documents should be readable and valid. Certificates issued in a language other than English or Hindi must be accompanied by an attested English or Hindi translation.

Candidates must bring the original documents during verification. A false mark entry, unclear document or mismatch in information can lead to cancellation.

Upload a recent colour photograph with a clear front view. Do not use a photograph with a cap, sunglasses, filters or an unclear background. Your appearance during document verification should match the uploaded picture.

Keep at least two extra copies of the same photograph. You may need them during document verification.

The signature should be clear and uploaded according to the size and format shown on the application portal. Avoid using initials when your regular signature is different.

Selected apprentices will receive a monthly stipend according to the applicable apprenticeship rules.

The official notification mentions the following current rates:

The second-year and third-year rates apply where the apprenticeship curriculum allows credit or exemption for earlier institutional training. Stipend rates may change when the competent authority revises the rules.

NFR will not provide hostel accommodation. Selected apprentices must arrange their own stay and daily travel during training.

Shortlisted candidates must submit a medical certificate during document verification. The certificate must follow the format given in the recruitment notification.

It should be signed by a government-authorized gazetted doctor who is not below the rank of Assistant Surgeon in a Central or State Government hospital.

NFR may refuse document verification when the candidate does not bring the required medical certificate. Candidates should therefore arrange it in the correct format before reporting for verification.

The apprenticeship contract ends after the training period. Northeast Frontier Railway is not required to offer permanent employment to every apprentice.

Course-completed railway apprentices holding the required National Apprenticeship Certificate may receive preference against the prescribed share of eligible Level-1 recruitment vacancies. However, they must still meet the recruitment rules, pass the required examination and satisfy other conditions. Candidates should apply for this recruitment to gain recognized training and work experience, not because of a guaranteed permanent appointment.

Your ITI trade must match a trade accepted for the apprenticeship position. A similar-sounding trade may not always be accepted.
