JAG stands for Judge Advocate General. It is the legal branch of the Indian Army. Officers selected through this entry handle legal work related to military rules, disciplinary matters and other legal issues within the Army.

This is not a regular soldier recruitment drive. Selected candidates undergo officer training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and are commissioned as Lieutenants after successfully completing the training.

The JAG entry is specially meant for law graduates. The Indian Army does not conduct a separate written examination for this recruitment. Initial shortlisting is connected to the candidate’s CLAT PG 2026 score, followed by the Services Selection Board interview, medical examination and final merit list.

Candidates should note the application time as well as the date. The portal will close at 3:00 PM on the last date.

The Indian Army has announced 10 vacancies for the SSC JAG 125th Course. These are combined vacancies for unmarried male and female candidates. The notification does not provide a separate fixed number for men and women.

Final selection will depend on the number of available vacancies, the candidate’s SSB performance, medical fitness and position in the merit list.

Before applying, candidates should check the complete eligibility conditions. Having an LLB degree alone is not enough. The age, marital status, marks, CLAT PG score and Bar Council requirements must also be met.

Nationality

An applicant must fall under one of the nationality categories mentioned in the notification, including:

• A citizen of India
• A subject of Nepal
• A person of Indian origin who migrated from one of the countries listed in the notification with the intention of permanently settling in India

Some candidates outside the first category may need an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Marital Status

The recruitment is open only to:

• Unmarried male law graduates
• Unmarried female law graduates

Candidates must remain unmarried until they complete training at OTA Chennai. A candidate who marries after applying may become ineligible for training even after clearing the SSB and medical examination. Marriage during training can also lead to withdrawal from the academy.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must meet all the following educational conditions:

• Hold an LLB degree with at least 55% aggregate marks
• Have completed either a three-year professional LLB after graduation or a five-year LLB after Class 12
• Have a valid CLAT PG 2026 score
• Be eligible for registration as an advocate with the Bar Council of India or a State Bar Council
• Hold a law degree from a college or university recognized by the Bar Council of India

Only candidates who already hold their LLB degree and mark sheets are eligible to apply. Candidates who are still waiting to complete their LLB qualification should carefully check this condition before submitting the form.

Is CLAT PG 2026 Mandatory?

Yes. A CLAT PG 2026 score is compulsory for this JAG entry. This rule also applies to candidates who have completed an LLM or are currently studying for an LLM.

The accepted examination is CLAT PG 2026, which was conducted in December 2025. A score from another CLAT PG year will not be accepted for this course. Candidates must also get their result verified at the selection centre before the SSB process begins.

Candidates must be between 21 and 27 years old as of 1 January 2027.

The accepted date-of-birth range is:

• Not earlier than 2 January 2000
• Not later than 1 January 2006

Both dates are included.

The date of birth shown on the candidate’s Matriculation or Secondary School certificate will be treated as final. Requests to change it later will not be considered.

Eligible candidates can complete the Indian Army JAG 125th application through the official Army recruitment portal.

Step 1: Open the officer recruitment portal

Visit the official Join Indian Army website and select Officer Entry Application/Login.

Step 2: Complete your registration

New users should select the registration option and enter the required personal information. Candidates who already have an account do not need to register again.

Step 3: Open the application dashboard

After logging in, select Apply Online from the dashboard.

Step 4: Select the JAG entry

The Officer Selection Eligibility page will appear. Find the Short Service Commission JAG Entry Course and click the apply option.

Step 5: Enter your details

Complete each part of the form carefully, including:

• Personal information
• Contact details
• Educational qualifications
• LLB marks
• CLAT PG information
• Previous SSB details, where applicable

Use the save-and-continue option before moving to the next part.

Step 6: Review the application

Check the application summary carefully. Make sure the spelling of your name, parents’ names and date of birth matches your school certificate.

Step 7: Submit the form

Submit the application after confirming that every detail is correct. Changes cannot be made after the application window closes.

Step 8: Print the application

Candidates should take two printouts of the submitted application containing the roll number. The notification states that the printout can be taken around 30 minutes after the application window finally closes on the last day.

Application tip: Submit only one form. Multiple applications from the same candidate can lead to cancellation.

A small error can create a problem during document verification. Check these points before submitting:

• Do not enter a nickname or shortened version of your name.
• Match your name, parents’ names and date of birth with your Class 10 certificate.
• Convert CGPA or grades into percentage using your university’s official formula.
• Enter the correct CLAT PG 2026 details.
• Do not submit more than one application.
• Keep your registered email address and mobile number active.
• Save copies of the completed form and roll number.
• Do not claim a degree, mark or registration that you cannot prove with original documents.

The Army notification states that incorrect or mismatched information may result in cancellation at any stage of recruitment.

Shortlisted candidates should prepare their original documents and self-attested copies before reporting to the selection centre.

Important documents include:

• Signed printout of the online application
• Self-attested passport-size photograph
• Class 10 certificate and mark sheet
• Class 12 certificate and mark sheet
• Graduation degree and mark sheets, where applicable
• LLB degree or provisional degree
• Mark sheets for all LLB years or semesters
• Bar Council registration document or proof that the LLB course is recognized
• University certificate explaining the CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula

The notification warns candidates that a DigiLocker certificate will generally not replace an original certificate. A limited exception may apply where the institution issues only an electronic certificate and properly authenticates its colour printout.

The selection process has several stages.

1. Shortlisting of applications

The Army will shortlist applicants based on the number of vacancies and the number of candidates who can be called for the SSB. The CLAT PG score is an important part of the shortlisting process.

2. Selection of SSB centre and date

Shortlisted candidates will log in and choose an available SSB centre and date. Available options are generally offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once selected, the SSB centre and date normally cannot be changed.

3. Five-day SSB interview

The SSB interview may be conducted at one of these selection centres:

• Prayagraj
• Bhopal
• Bengaluru
• Jalandhar

The SSB follows a two-stage process. Candidates who do not clear Stage I are sent back on the first day. Those who clear Stage I continue to Stage II.

4. Medical examination

Candidates recommended after Stage II undergo a medical examination according to the standards for officer entry into the Indian Army.

5. Final merit list

The final merit list is prepared mainly from the marks received in the SSB interview. Simply clearing the SSB does not guarantee selection.

Candidates must also be medically fit, meet all eligibility conditions and fall within the available number of vacancies.

6. Joining letter

Joining letters are issued according to merit and vacancy availability for training at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai.

Selected candidates will complete 49 weeks of pre-commission training at OTA Chennai. The course is expected to begin in April 2027.

Candidates who successfully complete the training are commissioned as Lieutenants. They also receive a Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras.

The training cost is paid by the government. However, candidates who leave for personal reasons or are withdrawn for reasons other than qualifying medical grounds may be required to repay the applicable training cost.

Cadets receive a fixed stipend of ₹56,100 per month during training at OTA Chennai.

After successful commissioning as a Lieutenant, the basic pay is under Level 10, ranging from ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500. Officers from Lieutenant to Brigadier are also eligible for a fixed Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month, subject to the applicable service rules.

The notification gives an approximate cost-to-company figure of ₹17–18 lakh per year after commissioning. Other allowances may be available depending on posting, duties and eligibility.

The initial Short Service Commission is for 10 years and may be extended by another four years, making the maximum engagement period 14 years.

Eligible and suitable officers may be considered for Permanent Commission during the tenth year, depending on the rules and policies in force at that time. This is a consideration process, not an automatic guarantee of Permanent Commission.

Your Class 10 certificate should guide the spelling of your name, parents’ names and date of birth.
